The front has a compact shield-like outline, slightly geometric, with a bright silver border surrounding a dark niello ground. At the centre is the figure of Mekkala, shown in a dynamic pose and rendered in bright silver against the dark background.
The visual strength of the pair comes from this contrast. The dark surface is not black enamel, paint or simple oxidation. It is niello.
